Is a dog protected by copyright?
We receive strange questions … But also strange questions deserve an answer.
The answer is no. Dogs, cats, horses and other animals aren’t protected by copyright. They are things of nature. You are free to take their picture.
But be cautious when people “manipulate” animals. People may have copyright in their creative efforts involving the animals.
Examples where you should be cautious:
– the animals wear protected materials such as jewellery or haute couture
– the animals are part of “a work of art” (e.g. they are thrown in the air by Jan Fabre)
– the animals are made to perform (in a movie …)
– it’s mickey mouse
